How To Sell Music

May 23rd, 2009

This concept I’m about to describe is nothing new and assumes you have music of a certain quality that interested parties would actually want to consume.

You have to be good first!

In the past, the record industry and mass media would use charts and force feed models to get people to buy. At the same time, others were using these ideas to build solid armies of followers.

Now, mass media and traditional sales charts are much less important, as people are able to use the Internet to search for what they really want. So we have gone from passive, force-fed battery chickens to self-motivated seekers, searching for what we really want.

A friend who worked at a major told me how they would commission major television adverts and then watch the spikes in sales in the following days.

Now, like I said, what I am describing is nothing new - there have and always will be people searching for what they want, but what’s interesting is that these people are gathering together more and more.

These people form “Tribes”- groups of like-minded people.

Not everyone will be part of a close knit “tribe”, but on some level or in some way, they may dip into some tribes some times - e.g. the 40 year old office worker who secretly loves boy bands. Ultimately we are dealing with the psychology of people, so it’s not easy to describe, but I’m going to do my best.

Here is a simple breakdown of how to sell music in the tribal age.

  1. Target Tribe or Tribes.
  2. Learn and study what they do and how they like to engage with music.
  3. Build presence on the Internet to start to join their conversation.
  4. Construct media and distribute your to the tribe.
  5. Collect their contact information and Lead them to buying opportunities & experiences.

1.  Target Tribe or Tribes

Hopefully you are making a particular type of music that can be roughly, basically categorized.  It doesn’t matter if you are not able to give it a sound bite, it just helps. Most important is that you are able to begin to identify groups of people who will be in to what you doing. At the fringes of a Tribe, there will be people who aren’t the “typical” member of the tribe. Try to think of the more “typical” members. You will probably come up with more than one tribe and that’s fine. Really try to drill down and think long and hard about this.

2. Learn and study what they do and how they like to engage with music.

Once you have spent the time to identify the tribes or tribe, you are going to have to study them.

  • How old are they?
  • What sex are they?
  • What do they do everyday?
  • Where do they like to hang around?
  • What do they do for fun?
  • What do they consume - buy, eat, watch?
  • Where do they go on the Internet?
  • What problems do they have?
  • What do they look like?
  • What is the telltale sign that they belong to the tribe?
  • What are the rituals of the tribe?
  • Who are their leaders?
  • How do they find out about new things?
  • Who do they pay attention to?
  • What are issues or subjects that they are passionate about?

3. Build presence on the Internet to start to monitor their conversation.

This can get technical, so I’m going to make it very simple:

  • Here you are going to use various Internet tools to listen in on what the tribe is doing.
  • You are going to build profiles in forums where they hang out.
  • You are going to build social media profiles.

4. Construct media and distribute your to the tribe.

You are going to construct various pieces of free content media that you will be distributing to your tribe. Each of the pieces of content is designed to elicit a specific response from your target tribe.

  • You want them to be interested and engaged with you.
  • You want them to feel like you are one of them.
  • You want them to see that you are great at what you do and that others think so.
  • You want to give them some of your best music for free - probably as a video.
  • Make sure that the tribe leaders get your media too.
  • You can distribute content offline.

5. Collect their contact information and go Offline.

  • Lead them to experiences & buying opportunities.
  • Once you have begun to get interest, you will need to somehow find a way to keep in contact with the members of the tribe. That could be via email, or as friends or followers on various platforms.
  • If you have got it right, you should also find that by now, people are contacting you to play shows and do things offline.
  • You are now in a position where you are growing a fanbase and can now direct them to your experiential events and paid or unpaid content.

This has been a simplification of the actual process that you will take, because each situation will be different, but hopefully you will see the new paradigm of how to sell music in the tribal and experiential economy.

Humanities Today - the Corporate **** of Culture

Humanities Today - The Corporate **** of Culture

Researched and Authored by: Michael J. Spindler

The author of this paper has a pessimistic view of the humanities. Mankind’s embodiment of vanity through expressions in music, art, infrastructure, science, and math, the list of ego enhancing areas fathom the depths in various forms. In the beginning, man lived as one with the environment. Now through the passage of time, man’s egotism for expression, which means nothing to the natural world that truly counts, affects us fundamentally as this behavior ravages the natural world and society’s perception of how they fit into this world, little more than a consumer.

The humanities directly impact the following sequential generations. The classics twisted and deformed to suit a new culture. Old ideas recycled, encouraging a lack of genuine creativity. In a society where materialism reigns, nothing beats replicas or silicon and pre-molded plastics. If humanities meant anything to modern society, there would be no taxation upon the citizens to keep a pulse alive for a few egos to enjoy or to profit by.

In today’s world, art is used to sell products. Music is created to sell products. Science is used to create new products to sell. Math is used to count the sales. Infrastructure is created to house the corporations, shuttle the labor force about, and to provide a false sense of community pride, in a city where no one will give another individual the time of day.

In the following, the author will review art, music, architecture, philosophy, and literature and how these contributing factors impact the current social norm in regard to politics, socioeconomics, and technology.

In any given form, art is a lost skill in today’s modern world. If the final piece cannot sell a product, the art is tossed aside. The advertising firms’ hired by corporate America defines and what is attractive and thought provoking. If art in the form of advertising can not be used to make a companies presence stand out, the art is discarded. In affect, denying a society of experiencing and relating the ideas of the artists at an individual level. “Between pictorial art and pictorial media there is one fundamental distinction: that between exclusivity on one side and mass dissemination on the other. In essence, this distinction is neither ideological nor technological, but economic.” (Daniels, n.d.) The argument is a simple one. Mass produced replica is the only substitute the common man in any society will ever know firsthand. By virtue of mass production, the producer has removed the inherent value of a singularly uniqueness and has produced a sterile and unappreciated throw away item for a throw away society.

The author will not deny that expression through music can be a therapeutic experience. The truly innovative modern musicians will never be heard beyond closed doors. Original music has no place in the world for music that does not have mass appeal to sell out millions of albums or fill stadiums to standing room only. Music, more than any other form of art is subject to and perceived by the public at the extrinsic level. The extrinsic value means that once the public has tired and moved on to another song, the material losses value in society. To the corporate machine and sell out musicians, this loss is accepted and expected. Every recording artist and recording label has a formula for what will sell, leading to a decade long swing of style and expression dominance that is played out until the form can be recycled no further.

Ah the beauty, impressiveness, and emboldening expression of architecture through construction using products and materials ***** and pillaged from the Earth. Humankind, a visual creature by nature, finds safety and comfort through recognition of landmarks. Landmarks are perhaps the strongest commonality that man can share with one another. The landmarks real meaning does not matter, home to a large corporate polluter; or a home to a corporation in trouble, always in need of constant financial bailouts through tax dollars and other subsidies. Clearly architectural styling affects a society’s perception to the quality of life around the community, and the inhabitants’ contributions to society. Even down to the style of home, perception by others in the community as to the value of the occupant is dictated by value of the property. In the end, styling versus functionality, any and every structure shares one common theme. Yet another carbon foot print to lay further waste to an environment as so the Jones family or business can keep pace with the other Jones family or business.

Philosophy, the truest form of egotism and arrogance, an attempt by men to define thinking, logic, and the world around them and the role within that is meant to be. Perhaps in the early developments of the known civilizations, truth and understanding were sought to help educate and mold a less than characteristically bright population. But in the world of today, the insight once mulled over for years by academics, has been lost on catch phrases, Chinese fortune cookies, and an obsolete method of thinking. In the world that is now, of information overload and fast food advice, society adapts and adopts the thinking mentality that is dictated by government, employers, religious groups, special interests groups, and the list goes on. To which ever group an individual identifies them to be so shall they inherit the groups’ mentality and thinking. Free thinking in this modern age boils down to researching which store has the best price this week.

The last item for review on our misadventure through the humanities is literature. The written word is perhaps the most intelligent and articulate form of expression that has been developed through the ages. The written word and the sudden proliferation of the internet has made it possible to dilute the world with such an immense pool of information that a word written for an expression of art can be and is as easily dismissed as one for personals ad.

Perhaps the authors’ perception is skewed to the connoisseur of the expressions through the humanities that played a tremendous role in developing the world in which humankind live. Exploration and expression is the inherent and exclusive domain of humankind. The disgust with modern society is with the perversion and exploitation of the characteristics that once made us unique and one with the world as a whole.

Eric de Fontenay asked:

Leading music-industry expert The Moses Avalon Company announced the launch of an interactive educational portal based on its successful Confessions of a Record Producer live-workshop series. Confessions Workshop On-Line contains 11 lessons, containing subjects ranging from copyright and royalties to new developments in digital distribution, music piracy, and the iTunes model. There is also an extensive library of Q&A compiled from years of live workshops and a link to ask Mr. Avalon direct questions. The only music-business workshop in the nation accredited by the California Bar Association, Confessions Workshop On-Line makes it simple for artists, songwriters, producers, and others to view the program anytime, anywhere.

Superstar producer Rob Chiarelli (Christina Aguilera, Will Smith) describes it as “the most well thought-out, articulate, and comprehensive workshop ever conceived. Absolutely the best”. Other industry pros’ comments have echoed this sentiment. “With so much change in the music industry lately and more artists using unconventional methods to further their careers, Confessions Workshop On-Line is the perfect tool for them to stay informed and empowered about their rights in a contract and their business in general”, says CEO Moses Avalon, “This is like having 24/7 access to a music-industry expert at your beck and call. Considering today’s economy, it’s far better than traveling to a live workshop or spending thousands on a music-industry college class.”

About Moses Avalon

Mr. Avalon began his career by producing and engineering records for several major and independent labels. After noticing that all the “how-to” books on the music industry were written from a formally-legal perspective and thus inaccessible to musicians, he took a more informal, real-world approach when writing his first best-seller, Confessions of a Record Producer: How To Survive the Scams and Shams of the Music Business. The book is now integrated in over 40 colleges’ curricula and the inspiration for a successful live workshop and online education portal. Mr. Avalon remains an active lecturer around the world, popular blogger of Moses Supposes, frequent guest at Bar Association events, CEO of The Moses Avalon Company, and author of two other books on the music industry.

Ebay Tips on How to Sell Your Items

December 6th, 2009
Ruby asked:

It is important that you understand the auction process when you start to sell your items in an auction.

What do I mean by the auction process?

Before you start to sell, I believe you need to understand the process that your potential buyers have to go through so that you can come out with an attractive sale approach to entice them to buy your item.

When I started to sell my first item, I was not sure what to do even though the auction site will prompt you as you go along. It is not just merely filling up a form on the screen.

Put yourself in the shoes of a buyer.

For example, you want to buy a musical CD that you could not find in the music store.

You would log on to eBay and enter the item description that you are looking for to do a search.

Would you enter something like “Music CD” or “Michael Jackson Thriller Music CD”?

Since you know what you are looking for, you will enter as much details on the item so that you will narrow down your search.

You will pick one of the results that somehow attracted your attention. It could be the digital image, the competitive price, etc.

After clicking on the chosen result from the search, you will be shown more details; more elaborate description of the item, seller feedback or reputation, etc.

You are likely to check his feedback profile so as to give yourself some comfort in buying from this seller and not the others who may be offering the same or similar price and terms too.

Once you are happy with it, you select the mode of payment and you are likely to see that you can pay by various type of credit cards or Paypal or bank transfer.

Then you will receive your item and if not, you will contact the seller. When you have received your item, you will be invited to give some feedback on the transaction.

In short, I strongly recommend that you go through the whole auction process by buying something on eBay to appreciate what your potential buyers will have to go through. From this transaction, you will learn what actions you need to do to attract them and enlighten them so that they will buy from you and be your repeat customers eventually.

Based on the above, it can be summarized as follows:

- Item heading and description should be as detailed as possible

- A digital image of your item

- Pricing has to be competitive

- Your seller feedback or reputation profile; ideally no negative feedback

- Mode of payment you will be accepting; Paypal highly recommended

- Follow-up after sale and delivery of the item; to get good feedback rating

One last tip, you should always do searches on items that you are selling. You will get to know and learn from your competitors how you should put up your item for sale and gain an advantage over them. This is how I manage to be so successful in my own auctions.

How to Pick the Perfect Wedding Music

December 6th, 2009
Eztracks asked:

If you’re about to be married, you, know that the most important part of the wedding is the actual wedding ceremony itself. And one of the most important aspects of the wedding ceremony, besides the exchange of vows, is the music.

“Music has the power to set a mood, evoke emotion, and give moment cohesiveness,” says Nina Calloway of About.com. “Are you a traditional Wagner’s “Here Comes the Bride” and Pachelbel’s “Canon in D” type of couple? Or are you more contemporary, looking for a song that captures your spirit like Norah Jones’s “Come Away with Me”?”

Experts say the most important factor in choosing wedding music for the ceremony, is where you are holding the event. “If your ceremony will not be in a religious setting, you can choose just about any kind of music you like — although you will want to stay within the bounds of good taste!,” according to WedAlert.com. “On the other hand, if your ceremony will be in a church or synagogue, or conducted by a clergy person at another location, you will probably need to stay within guidelines set by the clergy person or the church.”

There are several distinct parts of the wedding ceremony and each merits different kinds of wedding songs. In the prelude, for instance, when guests are gathering in anticipation of the beginning of the ceremony, it is often advisable to have gentle jazz or chamber music, according to elegala.com “The music should not overpower the mood; rather, it should complement the budding excitement,” says the site. On the other hand, the music for the bride’s entrance should reflect the excitement and be dramatic and sweeping. “The traditional selection is Wagner’s Bridal Chorus (Here Comes the Bride), but many brides are not afraid to insert something a little more reflective of their unique personality,” says the site.

You might also choose to have a vocalist singing anywhere from one to four wedding songs during the ceremony, according to WedAlert.com: “Appropriate places in the ceremony for vocal selections, depending on church guidelines, may include: (1) during the seating of the mothers or lighting of candles by the mothers; (2) immediately before the processional; (3) before the vows; (4) during the lighting of the Unity Candle; and (5) during the serving of communion to the congregation, if this is included in the ceremony.”

In order to find just the right songs for the vocalist, you can ask her for her own suggestions and then ask to hear her sing a few selections. “Before deciding whether the songs suggested by your musicians are really what you want, you should go to a store that sells sheet music and songbooks and browse in the wedding section,” advises WedAlert. “Chances are, you may find something that more closely expresses what you want to say than the songs suggested by your musicians.” Further, you might even want to hire a songwriter to pen a custom wedding song just for you.

However you choose your music for that special ceremony, keep in mind that the music is bound to be one of the things your guests remember most. If it’s special to you, it will be special to them, as well.

The Web has all the information you need to select the right wedding songs for your special occasion. Be it instrumental wedding music or wedding love songs for vocalists, you can count on sites like Ez-Tracks.com to provide a full complement of musical alternatives. Saying “I Do” has never been this much fun!

1,000,000 CDs For Sale By Unsigned Musician To Make Music History

December 6th, 2009
Deron Feivel asked:

Recording artist Terrance Day is in the process of breaking a new record (no pun intended). His goal is to sell 1,000,000 copies of the new independent CD “A Simple Life”. This is being done through his own popular web site MakeMusicHistory.com

He is offering free permanent web exposure to each “Official Sponsor” and “Supporter”. The site steadily receives more web site visitors each day. Terrance said, “traffic is coming in from all over the world every hour”.

Individuals, families, businesses owners, and organizations can be part of making music history! Everyone who supports this effort with a CD purchase receives a permanent place on the web site. Their name and link are added to the “Official Sponsor” or “Supporter” page online. During the official launch this week, MakeMusicHistory.com has received more than 92,000 unique visitors.

“The web site was developed over a period of a few months”, said Terrance. He has been making his own web sites since 2000 after he left his last corporate job as a Tech Recruiter. This web site seems to be destined to be his most popular web site so far.

“Clear Channel owns all the major radio stations and venues. Most musicians aren’t aware that few people control so much of what we hear” says Susan Tedeschi, a Berklee College of Music graduate from Massachusetts. It may be true that most independent Artists like Terrance Day won’t receive major airplay in the US. However, new emerging talent can still be heard through an online presence. This has been proven with independent music sales through CD Baby, iTunes, and other online music stores.

The CD “A Simple Life” can be previewed and ordered online for $4 and additional copies are only 99 cents (plus shipping & handling) at http://www.makemusichistory.com! “Official Sponsors” and “Supporters” also get a free digital copy of the CD, free ringtones featuring samples off the CD, plus more. A portion of sales will be donated to a non-profit organization called “Christian Children’s Fund”.

Terrance wrote 10 songs in 10 days from Nov. 1 to Nov. 11 in 2003. Those songs are included on the CD “A Simple Life”. After 4 years of recording and music production, he hopes to make a healthy impact on his audience. Songs on this new CD feature original Rock and Country music, with Alternative and Pop influences. The lyrics share positive messages with colorful imagination, faith, and life experiences. The CD was released last month on his own independent record label called “3000 Records”.

Previously, Terrance Day has toured around the USA several times since 1999. During the last tour in 2003 he drove a 1973 Plymouth Fury station wagon nicknamed the “Superwagon” from Michigan to Texas and many other states! He likes to write music that inspires people and share the music with as many people as humanly possible! He is available for booking at venues like coffee shops, churches, restaurants, bars, house concerts, or even as an opener for bigger acts. The next tour will begin this December, and continue well into 2008.

While selling 1,000,000 CDs is a major challenge, he remains focused on the goal. MakeMusicHistory.com was created so people who support independent music could help make music history! He confidently shares his goal with just about everyone he connects with. Terrance smiled as he said, “Even if I meet 1% of my goal, that would still be quite significant! You never know ’til you try.”

One Way to Succeed in the Music Business

December 5th, 2009
Kevin Sinclair asked:

When a recording company offers you a contract, you are given the opportunity to record your songs for the entire world to hear, and this quite often proves to be the start of the road to success.

Music Demo Tape

Initially when you contact management and recording companies, music producers and talent agencies they will ask you to supply them with a tape or CD of your music.

The demo tape you submit will provide the reasons for the record company to be interested in you and give you a recording contract. It not only portrays your image, but also your musical capabilities. After all, the recording company will need to see you have something special to offer them to warrant the money they will be investing in you!

Make Your Music Special

As your music must reach your listeners on an emotional level you should ensure the start of your songs will appeal to your audience. If the beginning holds no interest to the recording companies, they will not hang around long enough to get as far as the chorus and the public are never likely to hear your music at all.

Choose Your Song Carefully

Don’t just think you can record any old song, simply because you wrote it yourself. Do your research, and find one of good quality with the potential of encouraging your audience to listen to more of your stuff.

The Role of the Music Producer

The “music producer” helps you to select which songs to record and he makes all of the technical decisions. He knows how to put across your singing talents, and is the one who often turns you dreams into reality.

A good music producer will not only make your demo sound exciting but will also present you as a polished and professional artist in a style which will compliment your particular genre of singing.

How to Choose the Right Music Producer

You should shop around and check out the reputation of the music producers before making a decision about who would be the right one for you. Ask as many questions as you like. Have they had many successes in the past? Have they worked with anyone famous and produced a hit record? Have they received any awards for their music productions? When you meet him or her in person, really listen to what they have to say for themselves. Check out their music reproduction and ask yourself “Am I impressed?”

Are There any Other Options

It is not the end of the world if you cannot get a record deal and this does not indicate you are no good and that you should give up and concentrate on your day job! In this day and age, the World Wide Web has a lot to offer to those looking for a career move and the Internet is even providing a way for budding stars, who previously had a recording contract, to sell their music on line and become recognized with music lovers all over the world.

What to Include on Your Music Promotion Website

December 5th, 2009
Ty Cohen asked:

One of the powerful tools you can have as when attempting independent music promotion is a website. This is a given. There is absolutely no excuse for a musician, in this day and age, to not have a website. You website is how you will reach the world. This is how you will market yourself to every single person you come in contact with. The internet and your website will be two of the most powerful music promotion resources you will have.

If you are sold on the idea of online music promotion and are ready to start your site but don’t know what to include, then you have come to the right place. It is crucial that you properly design your site and include all the correct information. You want to be as creative and stylish as possible, all the while staying true to who you are and what your music is about.

Incorporate all of the above things into your site and you will no doubt be an online music promotion success.

Buying Music

December 4th, 2009
Mich21 asked:

Have you ever watched a music video or listened to a song playing on radio and felt sad that you might never see or listen to it again? Buying your own music in this case is not such a bad idea. There are many places you can get your own music today. From your local departmental store, music shops or online, you are spoilt for choice. You only need to identify the artist of your favorite songs and you are good to go.

Other than identifying a place to buy, you need to make sure that the store only sells authentic music. This is important as it guarantees you value for money. The quality of original music is way above that of pirated copies. The best aspect about this is that you get to enjoy the music as it was originally produced with all its beautiful effects and sound. Pirated or copied music lack this quality. You might end up buying music videos or CDs that are scratched which can be quite annoying to listen to.

The beauty of owning your own copies of blues, indie or emo music is that you can play it at will. You do not have to tune in to a particular show on radio or television to listen to it. You can watch your music video whenever you want. Consequently it is possible for you to make a copy in your ipod or mobile phone so that you can listen and see it wherever you are. If you own a vehicle, you can make a copy of the CD and play it in your car as you go to work. With an original copy of your favorite folk or alternative songs, you do not have to be afraid of making duplicate copies as long it is for personal use and not for sale.

So how do you go about buying music? If you can not find your best music video or blues CD in your neighborhood music shop, the internet is awash with places where you can easily get what you are looking for. All you need to know is the name of the artist and song. Knowing the title of the particular album can be quite helpful as well. You can use these three attributes to help in your search. After successfully locating the music you are looking for, following instructions to complete the transaction guarantees you a copy of your favorite alternative or emo songs.

Obviously buying a copy of your music videos, folk or indie songs will cost you quite a bit of money. However, there is some pride and joy associated with owning original copies. It makes for a beautiful collection over time. Consequently, buying only authentic music goes along way in supporting your favorite artists. If you are not in a position to buy music videos that you enjoy, there are some sites in the internet that legally allow downloading songs you like at a smaller fee or free of charge.

TF provides an exciting new place for music lovers to discover new music and new artists. But it’s much more than that. You didn’t really think the big record labels had a lock on all the best talent in the world, did you? The fact is, there are thousands of great, unsigned singers, songwriters and bands all over the world that are making awesome music — you just haven’t been able to hear it anywhere.

And, ironically, this music is often actually better than what the big boys are pushing. The artists you’ll find at TF, because they don’t have contracts requiring them to sound “mainstream,” regularly produce music that is fresh, innovative, and often in a much broader range of genres. At Tune Flow you get more styles, and more choices. Like our name suggests, we let the music FLOW…ALL the music!

TF is also about putting the ARTIST FIRST. At TF, artists are given the opportunity to get their music out to the world without restrictive contracts. And when you buy music at TF, it’s the artists who get the lion’s share (37% to 75% of total music revenues, and up to 88% of profits), not some big record label. TF also helps artists by providing invaluable exposure, infrastructure, marketing support, and more
